Not fat, just big boned

I am tired of people and parents making excuses for youth being overweight. You’re overweight because you eat too much, you eat crappy food and you’re lazy. Get off your butt and stop watching so much TV and playing on the computer; would it kill you to walk to the store instead of driving there? No, you’re not big boned; big bones do not create back fat and belly rolls. And why do overweight women insist on wearing tight clothing that only showcases their roles? It really does not look good; don’t you have mirrors in your house?

I found this story to be both interesting and kind of sad, although I am not sure I agree with schools sending out such notes, I see why they have to do it as both children and parents seem to be in complete denial about obesity.

I don't really know how to comment to this posting. Other than the fact that the whole BMI business is a load of crap, I think your commentary of being lazy and eating crap food doesn't necessarily apply to everyone. Although it is a HUGE component. As it applies to children I would tend to agree somewhat, but as with adults, there are many reasons for being overweight and one must take other health concerns into consideration. And yes...being 'big boned' is real. Can you honestly say that I would look good at 185 lbs? That's what I'm supposed to weigh and after being there several years ago, I look like I am dying.
Sufficed to say, obesity and children is a problem and needs to be looked into with a sense of urgency. I don't believe it's the role of a school to make commentary regarding this just as I don't believe that religion or the government has any business in people's bedrooms. Parents should be tasked to change the habits that they are imposing on their children and make positive changes that their kids will ultimately benefit from. I think TV and a sedentary lifestyle are huge contributors...but so is the media as a whole and one can't discount the role that advertising plays in people's day-to-day lives. We are constantly being bombarded with messages from all angles and I think that's the part that's taking it's toll.

I tried to make sure I focussed on children seeing as adults can have a number of factors such as thyroid, hormones, etc. that can add to the issue. Children today have never been fatter. All stats are saying that this generation of people (25 years and younger) will be the first in Canada to NOT outlive their parents, freakt stuff. When we were kids we played outside and walked everywhere, I do not see this with kids/teens these days.

Ron and I chatted about this very thing just recently and we've come to the conclusion that parents have become weirdly overprotective lately and with all the perverts and child molesters around I think they have good reason. The sad thing is that we all ran around as kids and got dirty and scraped our knees & stuff and tv played such a small roll in our lives. Now we see kids with cell phones and pdas, playing on computers and spending so much time in front of the television that they've lost the desire to get outside and stretch their imaginations. Some good friends of ours really monitor the amount of time their kids spend in front of the tv and it was so refreshing to go on a picnic with them earlier in the year and their kids were running around and having the time of their lives. No phones, tvs or computers. Just imagination and fresh air.

Too bad more parents are not like those friends of yours. Most kids get bored pretty quick outside and have no idea how to entertain themselves sans TV, computer or mobile phone. It is very sad but yes, there are certainly more dangers out there now but why can't parents supervise outdoor time then? Are parents becoming lazier too?

I like the slow metabolism defense myself.

There is no such thing as slow metabolism. If there was, then you'd see at least SOME obese starving people in Somalia.

Ever seen any?

Fat people always have an excuse for being fat, period.
